The book “What Is Wrong With Me” sows seeds that either bear fruit as soon as you read it, or grow slowly in you until you grow up to make a decision. In my case, while reading this book, I had the feeling that my mental tracks were bending up to something unknown or untested. I can say that Kris’s book personally gave me wings to act, and that’s what it’s all about, right? Thank you Kris.

“It’s rare to find a therapist and a novelist in the same person. Kris Hammoud is exactly that.  She weaves her medical knowledge of countless patient-journeys into a spell-binding story of self-discovery that creates an echo-chamber for self-reflection and revelation. Every page is an opportunity for the reader to reflect on the influences in one’s own life as a pathway to explain the present.  The story of Anna is the story of us all if we are willing to be honest with ourselves and open to answers.”

Kris Hammoud simultaneously destigmatizes mental health issues and weaves a compelling narrative. What is Wrong With Me is a combination of women’s fiction and self-help tutorial, as we follow Anna’s brave journey through childhood trauma into a tumultuous adulthood, culminating in a beautiful and important message for mental health care.

Kris Hammoud’s debut work is a riveting piece that blends a compelling narrative with insights into trauma, the footprints that do not fade despite the years, and the perils of repeated mistakes.  Hammoud’s prose is lean and accessible, stark where it needs to be, universally powerful and eminently readable.  The story she weaves commands attention.  Her insights command respect.

The author (maybe unintentionally) made a great compilation of important principles to understand human behavior. The emotional connection came up when for moments I was not sure if the book was mimicking reality, or if reality was mimicking the book. The book triggers a broad variety of real emotions. I am sure that each and every reader will find the emotion that she/he can identify in real life.

There are no classes to become good parents, but if those classes would be offered, this book will be one of the mandatory reading.

I will recommend this book to students of human behavior. They will learn principles of applied cognitive behavior therapy, psychodynamic psychology, empathy, origins of self-esteem, and the most important of all, they will learn about humans.

What is wrong with me by Kris Hammoud is a book about how childhood trauma effects ones ability to form and maintain relationships.  The protagonist Anna suffers emotional and sexual trauma as a child and without realizing, as an adult, starts using escapist behaviors to cope with her insecurities.  Dysfunctional relationships leave more emotional scars for Anna.    Kris Hammoud, through this story, highlights the effect of early adversities and trauma on life.  She also,  in her kind and compassionate way,  gives hope that it is possible to come out of the shadows of the past and live a productive and meaningful life.

What Is Wrong With Me? is the insightful story of Anna, a bright young woman with great potential who makes poor choices. Kris Hammoud carefully dissects Anna’s life and her responses to events in her life, illuminating the powerful effect trauma has on children caught in its grip. Beginning in elementary school and reaching through high school, college, and beyond, Anna’s story demonstrates how small, seemingly inconsequential interactions between parent and child can have a profound impact. A good read that ends with hope for healing life wounds.
